SUMMARY:Benson Memorial Lecture: Artifice & Intelligence: Collective Author
 ship
CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:This talk anchors recent advances in machine intelligence withi
n the broader history of collective labor. Rather than treating generative
AI as a break with humanistic traditions\, Dr. Tenen argues that it emerg
es from the rationalization and coordination of creative work across the n
ineteenth and twentieth centuries. Drawing on writers' manuals\, plot comp
endia\, and early efforts to formalize narrative production\, the talk wil
l show how fiction in particular became organized as a cooperative enterpr
ise rather than the expression of individual genius. Brief case studies fr
om the history of serial fiction and machine translation will illustrate t
he development of collective authorship in practice.\n\nMore information a
